Carpal tunnel syndrome
occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm
into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The
median nerve is housed by the carpal tunnel which is a
narrow pathway made of bone and ligaments at the base of the
hand. Thickening of tendon sheaths and arthritic changes at
the wrist can reduce the size of the tunnel causing pressure
on the nerve and therefore pain and discomfort
Symptoms include: frequent burning, tingling, or itching
numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially
the thumb and the index and middle fingers. As it progresses
decreased grip strength develops making it difficult to
grasp small objects or perform manual tasks.
Most cases of CTS are idiopathic, without known cause.
Repetitive activities are often blamed for the development
of CTS, along with several other possible causes. Women are
three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel
syndrome, perhaps because the carpal tunnel itself may be
smaller in women than in men
How is pain from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome relieved?
▪ Magnetic therapy (5-10 half hour sessions depending on
the severity of the problem, can help in reducing the
swelling, improving circulation and alleviating pain.
Utilizing magnetic wrist braces assists in keeping the wrist
supported and cocked to help prevent further pain,
discomfort and damage to the area.
